Review
Son of the first trumpet of Munich's opera, he was also an orchestra director of first order. In his symphonic poems he led the romantic orchestra to an unknown virtuosism and wealth of color.
With the poet Hugo von Hofmannthal created operas that go from the audacity of Elektra to the nostalgia of The Knight of the Rose. His acceptance of an official office under the Nazi regime (1933-1935) is still under discussion. His last four songs are a farewell to Romanticism.
