Gustav Mahler

The symphony as a whole world.

Romanticism · Germany and Austria

1860 – 1911

Kaliště (Bohemia) - Vienna

Review

He was one of the great directors of his time: he directed the Vienna Opera between 1897 and 1907 and then the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic. It was mainly in summer, in small cabins near the Austrian lakes.

Their symphonies, huge and full of contrasts, mix the sublime and the daily: marches, popular songs, corals. Close the Romanticism and announce the 20th century.
