Review

Son of a music-loving reel, Haydn was formed as a singing child in the Cathedral of St. Stephen of Vienna. In 1761 he entered the service of the princes Esterhazy, whom he served for almost thirty years in Eisenstadt and in the palace of Esterháza. That isolation, according to him, «made to be original»: with an orchestra of his own at his disposal he was able to experience without rest.

It gave a definitive form to the symphony and the string quartet, which it cultivated throughout its life (more than a hundred symphonies and almost seventy quarters). Mozart's friend and admirer, he was also a teacher of the young Beethoven. His two trips to London (1791-1792 and 1794-1795), organized by businessman Johann Peter Salomon, made him the most famous composer in Europe.
