Review

Son of a bass player from Hamburg, he began playing the piano in port taverns. In 1853 he met Robert and Clara Schumann; Robert introduced him to the world as the great musician of the future and Clara was his closest friend for the rest of his life.

Established in Vienna since 1862, he was the great defender of the classic forms in front of the «future music» Wagner and Liszt. It took about twenty years to dare with his First Symphony, baptized by some as «the Tenth of Beethoven».
