Review
Orphan when he was ten, he formed with his older brother. He was an organist in Arnstadt, Mühlhausen and Weimar; in Köthen he wrote much of his instrumental music, and from 1723 to his death he was a singer of St. Thomas in Leipzig, where he composed hundreds of cantatas.
He led the counterpoint to a perfection never even and melted in his work the German, Italian and French styles. After his death he was considered old-fashioned, until Mendelssohn led the Passion in 1829 according to Matthew and returned it to the public.
