Review

Organist in several provincial cities, became known with its Treaty of Harmony (1722), the basis of modern harmonic theory.

He arrived at the opera at the age of fifty: Hippolyte et Aricie (1733) caused a sensation and faced his supporters with those of Lully. His bold orchestration and dances make him the great French operator of the 18th century.
