Life
John Alden Carpenter was born in Park Ridge, near Chicago, on February 28, 1876. He studied at Harvard and, for most of his life, shared the composition with the management of the family's naval supply company, which was worth the nickname of «the composer man of business».
His music links the elegance of French impressionism with genuinely American elements, such as jazz and the rhythm of urban life. The suite Adventures in a Perambulator and ballets like Skyscrapers They portrayed the modern city. He died in Chicago on April 26, 1951.
