Review

Joseph Haydn's younger brother was also a singer in St. Stephen of Vienna. After a few years as a chapel teacher in Gran Varadino (now Oradea, Romania), he entered in 1763 the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg, where he remained for more than four decades and succeeded Mozart as an organist of the court and the cathedral.

He was overshadowed in religious music: his Réquiem in do under 1771 left a mark on Mozart's. He also wrote about forty symphonies; one of them circulated for centuries as the «Symphony No. 37» from Mozart, who had only added an introduction. Among his students was Carl Maria von Weber.
