Review

A virtuous organist, he was appointed organist of the imperial court in 1772 and in 1793 master of chapel of the Cathedral of St. Stephen, succeeding Hofmann. His 1790 treaty of composition was the most used counterpoint manual of his time.

He was Beethoven's counterpoint teacher and also trained Hummel. Its catalogue includes curiosities such as several concerts for guimbarda (harp of mouth) and mandora, as well as abundant music for organ and sacra.

Main works

  • Concert for high thrombon in case bemol major (1769)
  • Concerts for guimbarda, mandora and orchestra
  • Concert for harp in major
  • Fuses and preludes for organ
  • Masses
  • Treaty of composition «Gründliche Anweisung zur Composition» (1790)
