Review

He arrived in Paris in 1778 and, animated by Gluck, was dedicated to the opera. Euphrosine (1790) and Stratonice (1792) gave him fame, and his Chant du départ (1794) became one of the most popular hymns of the Revolution.

He experimented with the orchestra as few: in Uthal (1806) he dispensed with the violins. His symphonies, especially the first in the lower sun, were admired by Schumann. He was a founding member of the Institute of France and a professor of the Conservatory.
