Austrian at birth, was a student of Haydn in Eisenstadt. He was a chapel teacher of the cathedral of Strasbourg and in 1792 he travelled to London, where the Professional Concerts presented him as the rival of his former teacher, although both kept the friendship.
Established in Paris, he founded an editorial in 1797 —published the first full edition of Haydn's quartets— and in 1807 the Pleyel pianos factory, whose instruments would prefer Chopin. In his time he was one of the most interpreted composers in Europe.
