Review
Born in Liège and formed in Rome, he settled in Paris in 1767. There he became the great master of the opéra- comique, with simple and expressive melodies very linked to the text.
His Richard Cœur-de-lion (1784) was a success so great that the aria «♪ Richard, mon roi ♪» became a monarchic anthem during the Revolution. He also wrote some very read memories about music.
