Review

Son of a Viennese school teacher, he was a singer of the Imperial Chapel and a student of Salieri. He lived almost always without a fixed charge, surrounded by a circle of artists who organized the «schubertiadas», evenings dedicated to his music.

He wrote more than six hundred songs and took the lied to its highest height. He died at only 31 years old, and much of his work was later discovered: Schumann found his symphony. «The Great», which Mendelssohn premiered in 1839.
