Review
Officer of the guard and later official, he was a largely self-taught composer and member of the Group of Five. He sought a music that followed the natural intonation of the Russian language and portrayed the people cruelly.
He died at 42 years of age leaving many unfinished or unpolished works, which Rimski-Kórsakov reviewed. Ravel orchestrated in 1922 his Tables of an exhibition, today one of the most popular works of the repertoire.
