Life

Jean Sibelius was born in Hämeenlinna on 8 December 1865 and studied in Helsinki, Berlin and Vienna. The Finnish epoch of Kalevala was his great source of inspiration, and works like Finland They made him a symbol of his country's national feeling, then under Russian rule.

Although his language is very personal, he is associated with impressionism for his atmospheres and his work with the bell. The swan of Tuonela (1893), with its famous English corn on twilight ropes, is a year before Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune Debussy. After Tapiola (1926) barely published anything else. He died in Ainola, his home in Järvenpää, on 20 September 1957.
